We are so focused on putting up new structures that we rarely think about taking them down. Demolition contracting is the process of safely removing old structures so that new ones can take their place. It is work that doesn't get focused on much.
Here are some little known facts about demolition contracting:
To some people, that might seem very slow. It takes about a full week to fully demolish a house. That includes the time it takes to set up the equipment, demolish the structure, and take away the debris. According to Forbes, 300,000 to 400,000 old, uninhabitable homes are demolished each year.
Where does all of that junk go when a building is being demolished? A surprising amount of it can be recycled. Demolition companies profit from reselling the salvaged and raw materials they recover from the structures they are removing.
Most people think of dynamite or a wrecking ball, but there are many different ways to demolish a building. Sometimes explosives or wrecking balls are used, but just as often, it is a slower process in which several different techniques are used to manually break down the different parts of the structure.
This makes sense since demolition is the natural end of the life cycle for most structures. Demolition creates waste and a lot of it. The byproducts of construction are nothing compared to the actual debris created by a house or a building coming down. Although the industry does what it can to recycle the waste and use what it can, there will always be a lot of waste associated with demolition.
Many videos of demolitions you might watch on YouTube or television are showing implosion demolitions, in which an explosive force causes a building to wobble and then collapse in on itself. These are dramatic and captivating spectacles to watch, but in reality, implosions account for less than 1% of all demolitions.
